Creativity and new concepts are particularly important in teaching. Because only modern and attractive courses can survive in international competition. Prof. Laura Hartmann, Chair of Macromolecular Chemistry, and Prof. Dr. Michael Schmitt, Institute for Physical Chemistry, want to contribute to making chemistry education at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf fit for the future with a joint new teaching project. The “Sustainability in Chemistry” module is to be established in the bachelor's degree courses in chemistry and business chemistry in the future, thus anchoring the sustainability concept at an early stage. The Fonds der Chemischen Industrie (FCI) supports the teaching project with funds amounting to a good 23,000 euros. In addition, the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences provides its own funds amounting to 20 percent of the funding amount. This personal investment is a prerequisite for funding by the fund.

Prof. Dr. Michael Schmitt about the new module: “After completing the module, the students should be able to examine processes and procedures in the laboratory and in production for compliance with sustainability aspects and to make specific suggestions for their implementation. In addition, the most important basics of legislation in the field of sustainability and waste management are conveyed. '

The Fonds der Chemischen Industrie (FCI) is the support organization of the Association of the Chemical Industry. It promotes exemplary teaching projects in the chemistry course and related disciplines. Committed teachers should be given an incentive to develop new teaching methods and concepts. The aim is to integrate the new methods and concepts into the regular courses.

At the end of 2020, in addition to the chemistry course at HHU, twelve other universities and colleges will receive financial support from the FCI.
